A bomb explodes outside of the FBI building in Oklahoma City. Over one hundred people were killed, the side of the building was blown open, and no one knew who did such a malicious thing. A few days later, people know Timothy McVeigh was the terrorist who blew up the FBI building. People like Timothy McVeigh don’t just blow up buildings just because they feel like it. Timothy, like the many other people after him, is called a terrorist because of the reason behind his violent doings.
Terrorism was flourishing in 1960’s America. Nearly every chapter of this book documents acts of terrorism by white people against black people: a leader’s house bombed, a protestor’s face smashed, girls going to church blown up, and finally, of course, Martin himself getting assassinated. MLK Jr. was not a moderate, at least in the last few years of his life, post-1965. At this point, he observed that the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Bill and the 1965 Voting Rights Act didn’t effect change of the type he was hoping for. He remained an advocate for nonviolence, but when riots broke out, he disclaimed their methods, but did not let society off the hook, claiming “riots are caused by nice, gentle, timid white moderates who are more concerned
In accordance with the 2014 Quadrennial Homeland Security Review, the terrorist threat is one of the prevailing challenges that pose a significant risk level to the United States as well as to American citizens abroad and many U.S. allies (Department of Homeland Security, 2014). In the United States, the Federal Government assumes the responsibility for leading the efforts that seek to manage the risk level of the terrorist threat. That is why the Federal Government has created the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), whose main mission is to prevent terrorist threats by managing their risk levels (DHS, 2014). Since the terrorist threat is a very complex threat to manage for one entity or agency alone, the DHS is able to accomplish its main mission by working in partnerships with many federal agencies; State, Local, Tribal, and Territorial (SLLTT) Governments; private and public organizations; international partners; and communities all across the United States (DHS, 2014). In all of those partnerships, the Federal Government through the DHS plays a leadership role
(NPR, 2014, para. 13) This department has many responsibilities. One of these responsibilities is grouping the condition of threats in America. These acts made America safer.
Identifying and assessing the risks of facilities, that if attacked and damaged, would result in significant consequences, negative impact on national economic security, national public health and safety, public confidence, national governance, or some combination of these adverse outcomes is important. The order of precedence would follow the path of facilities, equipment, conveyances records, artifacts, and materials. With prioritized approaches put in place to mitigate the effects of incidents, the owners and operators of these facilities can make risk-informed decisions during incidents and following through with rapid response and restoration, even during times of limited resources. These actions not only allow for an increase in security, but it also strengthens resilience through such an approach that identifies and prioritizes these actions. The Government Facilities Sector (GFS) is in ownership of assets that are owned or operated by 56 states and territories, 3,031 counties, 85,973 local governments, and 566 tribal nations, totaling more than over 900,000 constructed assets (Homeland
Mission Overlaps within the Department of Homeland Security In the United States, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is primarily responsible for ensuring the safety of the general public. Aside from that, this department seeks to protect the U.S. from terrorists, and it ensures that the immigration and customs is properly managed, and that disaster is efficiently prevented, as the case may be. However, some have called for the shutting down of the DHS because mission areas overlap within this department. In line with this assertion, this paper will identify the possible mission areas or responsibilities that overlap within the DHS and at the same time, this paper will also provide recommendations for possible consolidation.
9/11, Criminal Justice Agencies and Homeland Security Thirteen years, two months and eight days have passed since September 11. Still, the remnants of a terrorist attack on the Twin Towers lingers among the public’s mind. Security has been beefed up with extreme standards, stressing the safety of the American public from eminent attacks. This has also created a boost in awareness to suspicious activities and personnel. To some, the ignorance is stronger than most because of the belief that the actions committed on 9/11 were meaningless, that it didn’t change a thing in American society.
The World Trade Centers in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington D.C were struck by airplanes that were hijacked by terrorists. This terrible tragedy killing many people had deep impact on the whole American citizens. They were grief stricken, left in fear, and full of revenge to the people who committed such an awful thing. Thousands of lives were suddenly ended. The attacks involved four synchronized plan hijackings, two from Boston, on from Newark and one from Dulles International Airport in Washington.
The chemical purchasing computer system can be linked to law enforcement’s computer system which raises an alarm on major purchases being made regardless of location and time. Law enforcement can begin to investigate and legally monitor activities of individuals that have raised an alarm and if found necessary law enforcement can request a search warrant from a judge to conduct search and seizure operations. Since our water supply is considered a critical industry and infrastructure, employees should be required to undergo stringent security background checks and as well as a thorough psychological exam to ensure they are mentally and physically able to perform their duties. These employment policies can add an additional layer of protection against any terrorist links that employees may have had. The idea of these measures is to provide law enforcement with an effective tool to identify individuals with potential terrorist related ideologies and then devise actions to counter this potential threat in order to protect the residents of
The perception of prisoner radicalization is an extrusive issue and as of recently, has quickly developed itself as a growing concern in the United States. Prisoner radicalization manifests within the enigmatic subgroups of prison inmate gangs and radical elucidations of religious values which overtime, stimulate the formulation principles based upon fanaticism, abhorrence and violence (Hamm, 2017). Currently, our government is unaware of the actual extent of the issue regarding terrorist’s impacts on prison inmates. However, many of the scholars and experts in prisoner radicalization through terrorist influence, believe that immediate attention needs to be focused in this area, further improving upon our understanding of the growing potential threat.
While the US was dealing with other situations in the world, such as the Iran-Contra situation, Hezbollah was born and growing into the serious threat they are today. It might be safe to say that the intelligence community didn’t have any much information about this group except for the fact that they blew up the US Embassy in Beirut in 1983 . They have committed other acts of terrorism until 1996 and then they kind of went underground and resurfaced in 2006. By continuing on doing more research to find out why the down time for the group and it was because of the United Nations law that went into effect trying to disarm all militants in Lebanon.
Moral Diplomacy was adopted by Woodrow Wilson and rejected the approach of "dollar diplomacy." Rather than focusing mainly on economic ties with other nations, Wilson's policy was designed to bring right principles to the world, preserve peace, and extend to other peoples the blessings of democracy. D. George Bush selected the themes used by Democratic President Woodrow Wilson from 1912-1920. Wilson, like Bush, advocated a moralistic foreign policy. Reacting to the jingoism and materialism of his predecessors Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft, Wilson insisted that the goal of American foreign policy was to spread the benefits of democracy throughout the world.
FEMA did not play any role during the Boston Bombings of 2013 emergency response (George et al, p.29). However, it would be naïve to assume that FEMA and DHS are today not up to their task of preparedness and response to emergencies despite the obstacles. It is important to point out that, the evolution has been met with a number of challenges. In as much as it has seen an increase in the number of actors, the conflicts within has affected the end result of emergency response. The DHS and FEMA for example, these two entities and their competition for authority meant that there was an overall lack of preparedness to counter Hurricane Sandy.
The term terrorism is inextricably intertwined with the notion of foreign actors unleashing widespread disaster on American soil. This notion is not unfounded and carries a very real and very dangerous threat to the US. While the US must of course be constantly vigilant with regard to the threat of an attack emanating from a foreign land, the US must also consider an equally dangerous threat that lurks in our own backyard: the domestic terrorist. Make no mistake, the use of the word domestic should by no means diminish, and should in no way normalize the malevolency these groups perpetuate. One is tempted to limit one’s thinking regarding domestic terrorism to the latest news story and how that may affect the US in the here and now.
