Rainsford a celebrated hunter falls overboard in the Caribbean and swims to a nearby island called ship trap island. A rich hunter living on the island named Zaroff takes him in and gives him food cloths and shelter. He tells him about his hunting then tells about his new animal. Rainsford realizes he means humans and is out raged when Zaroff offers to take him hunting. Zaroff sends Rainsford off with a knife a set of cloths and food then starts to hunt him.

The suspense in the story is very important because it adds to how the story is being told, and how the reader portrays the story when reading. The suspense is developed while Rainsford is talking with General Zaroff about what the most dangerous game is, the readers are left wondering what could this game be and why couldn’t Rainsford think of it.
