Although equality is a integral part the constitution, it is not readily upheld. Specifically, education is a fundamental right which is far too often neglected, and therefore, a leading cause of poverty and inequality in the world today. Without an education, one can not be expected to succeed. Since, equality is a fundamental right of the constitution, everyone must be given equal access to education for this to be upheld. However, the positions that people are born into are hard to escape. These may include race, gender, and economic status. Because of this difficulty, many people get stuck in poverty and never become equal. They are also held down by themselves and their close friends and family. For example, if one’s parents were not educated well, they will often not strive to educate their children. In Raisin in the Sun, a couple of the characters criticize Beneatha, a black woman, for ever wanting to go to college. First, her boyfriend George says, “Because this is stupid! I don’t go out with you to discuss the nature of “quiet desperation” or to heat all about your thoughts—because the world goes on regardless—” (Hansberry, 97) George was raised to not care about education. He rubs this off on other people by not wishing to take part in intellectual discourse. Second, Mrs. Johnson says, “I know—but sometimes she act like ain’t got time to pass the time of day with nobody ain’t been to college. Oh—I ain’t criticizing her none. It’s just—you know how some of our young people gets when they get a little education” (Hansberry, 102). After this she also says, “Well—I always thinks like Booker T. Washington said that time—‘Education has spoiled many good plow hand’—” (Hansberry, 103) Again, Mrs. Johnson has no care for a college education. She, in fact, finds it annoying that Beneatha cares about getting one. Because of that, she expresses her unhappiness with the matter.
