Not Everyone can be a Great Leader Great leaders have certain qualities, such as communication skills, having succor, and being focused, that no one else possess. Throughout Lord Of The Flies by William Golding, Ralph, the main protagonist and leader, shows multiple signs of his leadership skills. Jack, the main antagonist with his militaristic mindset, also shows some signs of leadership. The island that all the 8-12 years old boys are on, is deserted and requires a strong leader. Ralph possesses those certain qualities that allow him to be the best fit leader. Ralph has succor for all the boys on the island, including the outcasts such as Piggy, the voice of reason, Simon, the spiritual figure, and all the young children. When Piggy, Ralph’s closest friend on the island, was complaining about Jack, saying, “I know about me. And him. He can’t hurt you: but if you stand out of the way he’d hurt the next think. And that’s me” (Golding 93). Ralph understands what Piggy is going through, so Ralph stays as leader and prevailed through the challenges from the hunter tribe attacking them, to being rescued. One can not deny that Jack is in better shape to be leader because he is able to hunt and boss the other choir boys around. However, Jack has bossed them around so much, they have a fear of speaking up and out, which is a sign of an inadequate leader. When the choir boys, “with dreary obedience raised their hands” (Golding 23), to vote Jack as chief shows that Jack does not have the qualities, he just has a pack of children who do whatever he says like a dog to a human with a treat. Therefore, Jack is not capable to be a good leader because everyone else that Jack does not boss around voted for
