The style of writing is vivid and descriptive allowing one to see what was happening throughout the book as if we were on the island. At times it was harsh and brutal. In many of the scenes the colorful description of how they killed was very violent and bloody with torturous behaviors. Simon is savagely stabbed and killed by his friends after they lose control thinking he was the beast. CHARACTERS Ralph is confident, and calm. He is a leader and is willing to take that role. Ralph is sensible and smart. He instinctively wanted to form a system of government, build shelters, and start a signal fire that was ignited until rescued. He is combative and manipulative. Jack is seemingly happy to be without rules and undermines authority. Jack throughout the book is hunting and killing pigs, cutting their throats. Jack has a desire to kill. Ralph represents savagery and dictatorship. Simon is shy, kind, willing to work for the good of the community. He has a strong moral compass and always wants to do the right thing. He is the only one in the book that does not engage in violence. Simon represents goodness. Piggy is chubby and a victim of bullying amongst his peers. He is intelligent and innovative. He represents intellect and order. In the book, Piggy can make sundials and use his glasses to set fires. Roger is cruel, moody, and enjoys hurting others. In the book Roger kills Piggy without any remorse. Roger represents pure evil. Sam and Eric are twins. They are easily manipulated. In the book they are manipulated into joining Jack’s tribe. POINT OF VIEW The book is written from a third party’s point of view.
