In several ways the novella Anthem can be compared to the modern day communist dictatorship North Korea. Although they are similar in some places they are completely different in other ways. Ways they are able to be compared and contrasted are the forms of government, the state and mentality of the citizens, and development or progress as a civilization. Although it is often said that anywhere can be better than a certain place, such as people saying that school is the worst place that exists for a relatable example, there are various different factors that play into the overall condition of something that it can be extremely difficult to tell. Everyone is equal to each other, they all have the same thoughts, and they all work to provide for each other. These ideas are the same in North Korea, although they are actually able to know who their families are. In the books civilization the children are not allowed to know who they are actually related to, they just brothers and sisters to each other. The citizens of the fictional civilization are also assigned a time and place for mating whereas in North Korea they have at least the freedom of choice given to them when it comes to relationships and children. Rand Paul in his argument against the Energy Independence & Security Act of 2007, while using the book Anthem to solidify his argument, states “The collective has no place basically for individual choice” which is the overall mentality of the citizens within the book, they are all seen as equal and are lead to think that they should work as one, not individuals. In the way that the civilizations are run the two seem remarkably similar and can be compared to each other quite easily. The state and mentality of the citizens is better in North Korea due to them being given much more freedom in what they want to accomplish throughout their lives. Where the progress of the civilization is concerned one of them advances where the other lacks, meaning that the military power isn’t too great in the fictional civilization but it is quite great in North Korea. From these three points either side can be argued about which one is better, which is right because although something is below standards from one perspective, it can be view upon from a different point of view from which it seems great, which means that neither of these civilizations are better than the
