Anthem is writing as a journey of Equality 7-2521, a young man living in the future in which people have lost all knowledge of individualism, for not even knowing the word "I" and can only speak of himself as "We." Everyone lives and work in collective groups and he is assigned to a Street Sweeper of the city by the Council of Vocations. However, Equality 7-2521 try to lead himself to recreate electric light and how it can be harnessed to human benefit. He has been taught that it is a sin to harbor secret ambitions, and so he believes he is guilty. Equality 's struggle to be free and to reach an individual life/ When he presents his discovery to the Council of Scholars, they punish him for daring to act as an individual and threaten to destroy his creation.
The purpose that the author had in writing this was to show people how and why some idea, trend, or behavior spreads throughout society. Another reason is to show how greatly people are influenced by there surrounding rather than their own genes and personality. A passage in this book that really shows that was on page 165: "...a seminary student literally stepped over the victim as he hurried on his way." This surprised me because I would think a seminary student who is good to give a speech about helping others would be able to help out someone clearly in need. I was very interested in how this man, regardless of how good of a man he was, was influenced strongly by the fact that he was in a hurry.

Which is passed along to their students in one final lecture as known as " Journeys." Randy decides it is important that he give one final lecture, once he learns that his cancer is terminal. The book becomes his autobiography focused on life lessons that Randy has learned from his past. The life lessons he spoke about were to dream big, show gratitude, never give up, tell the truth, and many other things.

He urges people to live simply and warns against the difference between “essentials” and just extra “stuff.” As he says, “Our life is frittered away by detail. ” We focus so much on the future and all the silly distractions going on around us, that we lose sight of what is really important. He believed we don’t need as much technology, for example. Also, we could live off of one meal a day instead of three or four.
The second stanza is strong reminders that while men pay more attention to the desires or their own mind, they fail to see their own failings in life. Only after their eyes became open would they seek help. A great representation of this is found starting in (21-22) where Jesus is alone, not called upon but forgotten, until the time in which mean realise they are downing and have no life vest to keep them afloat. An excellent example of this is (23-26) give reference to the only time that men would see their own demise is also the time in which they would seek help.
