In “Raymond’s Run” By Toni Cade Bambara the theme of the story is giving and receiving respect fosters friendship. Squeaky at the beginning of the story is very disrespectful. An example is when Squeaky is talking about how everyone in her city knows she’s a good runner, and she says, “I’m the fastest thing on two feet and that goes for Gretchen too… she's got short legs… she's got freckles… no one can beat me” (Bambara 548). Squeaky does not respect Gretchen as a person or as a runner. She judges by her looks not her personality or ability. Because Squeaky negatively judges her, Gretchen does not respect Squeaky either, and it interferes with them becoming friends.
