The introduction of They Say, I Say by Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein outlines the basic template of the authors’ approach to rhetorical writing. The central template the book focuses on is “they say, I say”, as the title suggests. This technique requires the writer to assess and evaluate the author’s argument and paraphrase it in his or her own words. Then, the writer must respond to the argument with her own stance, provide evidence, and formulate an opinion. Heinrichs spent many years working with the art of rhetorical persuasion. Even though he is a husband, father, teacher, and author, he always finds time to perfect his persuasion skills. Heinrichs’s main strategies which he uses constantly throughout the book are his backstories and examples; with that, his best chapter is Chapter nine: Control the Mood, and I believe this book should be used in college as ENGL 1301 study guides to help students get a better idea on the art of persuasion. Jay Heinrichs’s book, Thank You For Arguing, gives several techniques on how to become a more rhetorical and/or persuasive person.
