I would first start off with a passage from Joshua. This Book of Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success (Joshua 1:8, ESV).
Before completely getting started I suggest asking one’s self these questions. When will I be able to read? Is there a certain time that can be set aside each day for me to study? Where will the best place to be, so that I can concentrate? Do I have the initial tools to start with such as a Bible, notebook or journal, pen, pencil and highlighter? Continually approach the Scriptures within an attitude of humbleness and desire. Let God know that you need him when approaching His word. Ask that He guide you through His wonders and all that is glorious of the gospels. Finally ask that He bestow upon you His unwavering and unfailing love. In your observation, it will most likely lead you to thought-provoking questions about the text. The step of interpretation lets you sort through numerous notes in order to provide answers. You will want to know who the author is. How did they become the author of the book or that particular passage? Who was the person or their Audience at the time? Who and how many are being discussed? Who and why is it being said? Where is the author coming from with this information? Also where is it taking place? Is there a significance to what’s said and are there alternative meanings to it?
