1. In his essay, Rich is comparing the difference between reading online and reading from a book. Reading online allows for you to get different points of view on an article instead of just one. Reading online also leads to developments in computer skills that you would not get by just reading a physical book. Reading from a book, however, can be seen as more beneficial to one’s intellect because it does not have as many distractions as there are on the internet. Less distractions leads to being more focused, which results in higher reading scores.

The main differences between reading in print and reading on the internet are that reading in print allows for less distractions and are usually better written, whereas reading on the internet is the complete opposite. Print reading has less distractions because it is just you and the book, which makes it harder for your mind to think about things not pertaining to the book. Also, reading from a book usually means that you are reading from an author who has had years of writing experience, so you know that you are reading quality content. On the other hand, reading on the internet allows for the mind to be distracted by advertisements and popups, which shifts the minds focus from reading to browsing. The author identifies specific children by name throughout her essay because it shows the reader, if they are of age, that their child could end up like one of the children disused about in the essay. A parent might not want to raise a child that would grow up to be like Nadia, who only reads error filled fan fiction. Hunter Gaudet, another child mentioned in the essay, struggled in school because of his dyslexia, but once he was introduced to readings online, his readings skills improved.
