The Great Gatsby Reading Journal #2 In my reading of the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald (1925) I am continuously amazed by the wealth in long island in the 1920’s. People seem to have everything. They live in grand homes, throw lavish parties and do whatever they want. In all of this excess, no one seems to understand the value of the things around them. They don't appreciate how how hard normal people have to work to make a living, they don't value the relationships they have with other people and they don't seem to play by the normal rules of society. Money is everywhere in the neighbourhood of Long Island. Gatsby and his friends have massive homes, fancy cars, big parties and expensive clothing. Gatsby orders his clotting from a London clothing designer and even has a gold toilet. “His bedroom was the simplest room of all, except where the dresser was garnished with a toilet set of pure dull gold.”(P.93). The people surrounding Nick the main character have more money than they will ever need. …show more content…

They appear generous by throwing parties, and buying each other gifts, but outside of buying peoples friendship, they do not treat each other with respect. For example, Tom, Daisies husband, is an un-loyal, womanizer. Another example is Mr. Gatsby, he throws parties at his house regularly, where he offers food, drinks and entertainment, but never attend any of them, as if he doesn't care about the people he has
