This is an essay written by a student that uses many great techniques to help develop the story line. The techniques help the reader gain more information on what the writer went through due to her constantly waking up with “soggy pajamas.”

Right of the bat in the opening paragraph, the author used an abundance of writing techniques. They had a great hook saying they “hated going to sleep” so I was not sure where the story was going to go. If it was about nightmares when sleeping, just not wanting to sleep, or wetting the bed. The techniques help the reader gain more information on how dangerous a credit card was for the author which led her to live in debt. One instance changed her view on life for the better.

The author has a poem even before their essay that warns the reader to be cautious with a credit card and that she will give insight on how to avoid it or overcome it. She described her lifestyle with the credit card as ‘living for today,’ which exactly what I credit card can make you do because it is money there for the spending. The author uses many words in quotes (WC) to emphasize them and describes them and generally, they are what an individual would think of when they think of the word. For example, she used the word ‘approved’ to describe that it makes young people feel like they have made it into adulthood when approved for a credit card or loan. She refers to shopping as being her “drug of choice.” This use of figurative language compares shopping to a drug which is accurate because drugs can be destructive and have a negative affect just like over shopping which can lead to major debt. I love the statistic that she used saying that using a credit card “doesn’t feel like spending, so people spend more, ‘usually 30% more.’” I believe this is true because I have seen it done first hand by my dad.
