There is a place that most can only dream of, where anyone may come to escape their troubles to start again. Coming to America was such a place for many immigrants that were coming from all over the world. Escaping persecution of religion or social status America came off to be a safe haven. This was the reason for American literature work like The promise land by Mary Antin. She portrayed America as a place that is as magical as Disney World. Her literary work was filled with realism that was inspiring to others. With stories such as The promise land gave birth to the idea of the American Dream. That there is not always that whole happily ever after. It is up to you to find that silver lining that makes your ending something great or not. Marry Antin found her way after her mother died and she moved to America all the way from Russia. Though all of this she saw things in a positive light. Antin then goes on to be the great writer she is to inspire others. Her book The Promise Land also an autobiography tells of how this young Russian girl is able to make it in America. Even before Mary Antin’s book was even published you also had writers like Emma Lazarus. Welcoming all to America saying we will take in the poor, the sick and the destitute. All may come and share this land to have a better life for all. They compared this place to that of heaven in their own ways. One uses the terminology of the promise land, which has been referred to a heaven in the bible for centuries. While Lazarus says “I will leave a lamp by the golden door”(). The golden door of heaven she is leaving a lantern so that you may find it. Works of literature like this paint a picture of absolute promise to those who read it. Conveying the thought that the grass is always greener on the other
