Renowned American psychologist Timothy Leary once said,“Society is unbearable, but it is less unbearable at the top”. The novel ,Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, depicts a society so consumed by consumer goods and entertainment that has removed their intellectual thought and emotion. The society depicted is similar to that of today’s because of the similarities in rapid technological advancements and similar behavior. Although many believe today’s generation has become advanced compared to other generations, many will argue that society is a mindless society, that became lazy and detached to world problems and switched to sports and pointless entertainment. Like Bradbury’s community, people tend to focus on drama than on worldwide problems. After an innocent man is killed for “being” Montag the broadcast says, “We now take you to the Sky Room of the Hotel Lux for a half hour of Just-Before-Dawn, a program of --” pg 162. The person speaking describes a careless population similar to the 21st century's people. With shows and broadcasts like TMZ, Keeping up with the Kardashians, and Fox News, people begin to not care about death and despair. “Reality” tv mixes people’s minds into thinking everything that happens in the world is fake and just on a screen. Bradbury claims people can rebuild after a disaster, but shows how similar actions to the novel’s society may cause the same outcome and how disaster can be prevented completely. Bradbury's hope is to inspire the future to become a better one by describing a world that society is leading to, similar to that of Night by Elie Wiesel.
