Was Andrew Jackson a good president? Should his presidency be admired? Some people might say yes he was a good president and his presidency should be admired. Other people might say no, he was not a good president and his presidency should not be admired. I’m here to tell you while even though he might not be your favorite president, his presidency should still be admired. Andrew Jackson’s presidency should be admired by the current generation because he was the first president to fight for the rights of common folk and he exposed the corrupt bargain. Because Jackson was so controversial as president, many people said he wasn’t fit for the job. However, they were wrong. The corrupt bargain was a deal that took place between John Quincy Adams and Henry Clay. According to a newspaper article that Henry Clay claimed was not true, Clay told Adams that he would support him in winning the presidency in exchange for Clay being named Secretary of State. John Quincy Adams won the presidency and Henry Clay was appointed Secretary of State. Henry had denied the corrupt bargain when mentioned to him, so of course Jackson found this to be suspicious. Jackson accused Henry Clay and John Quincy Adams of making a corrupt bargain, and using each other to gain power. Henry Clay still denied that they did anything wrong, but Jackson knew the truth. John Quincy Adams knew that “his decision to appoint Clay secretary of state seemed to confirm rumors that the two men had struck a deal, and cries of a “corrupt bargain” flew around the country. Jackson, meanwhile, returned to Tennessee but grew increasingly convinced that he had been cheated.” This quote tells us that after the election, Andrew Jackson returned to his home, but he knew that Adams and Clay had in fact made a deal that gave them both power. He was determined to expose this bargain so the United States could see that Clay and Adams had cheated, and they should not be allowed to govern the country. Jackson did do some things that some people didn’t agree with, but it was always to improve the lives of the citizens. One of the controversial things Jackson did was invade Florida and destroy villages against orders. He had been sent to Florida to round up captured slaves, but he instead he conquered much territory and remove Indians from the area. People believed that Jackson did this just so he could acquire more territory for the United States. However, Jackson himself said that his only motivation behind it was to prevent Native American violence against the white settlers. Native Americans at the time were quite violent towards white settlers, invading and burning down their settlers. “He claimed, after the invasion, that his action stemmed in no way from a desire to extend the territorial limits of the United States but was instead a preventative measure against further Indian violence against whites.” This quote tells us that Jackson himself said that he was in no way trying to expand the United States, All of his actions in Florida of invading Indian villages was simply to protect U.S. citizens against violence from Native Americans. Even though some of Jackson’s actions were questionable at first, they were all for the good of the American
