John Basilone was one of the elite few of our nation to be awarded with the national Medal of Honor. John was the sixth of ten children, born in Buffalo, New York but raised in Raritan, New Jersey. He opted not to go to highschool, and joined the Army looking for “adventure.” He boxed in the Army, before he was sent to the Philippines. After he completed his first tour, Mr. Basilone returned home and became bored.
In 1941, the bombing of Pearl Harbor began the second World War for the United States. This act started the conflict of thousands of American soldiers being killed or captured for years to come. Today it is called the most daring rescue mission of World War II, the saving over five hundred captured soldiers. The documentary American Experience, “Bataan Rescue" summarizes the surrendering, life in captivity, and the rescue that these men went through. It was only a few hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor that American soldiers stationed in the Philippines knew they could not win against the Japanese forces there.

Sergeant-Major Osborn was prepping his troops to go out and fight the Japanese, when they were prepping to go out a grenade was thrown into the defensive area the Canadians were in. Sergeant-Major Osborn without hesitation yelled to warn the others, while simultaneously jumping on the grenade he would not be able to throw back, sacrificing his own life to save the lives of his troops. After his death he was awarded the Victoria Cross, one of the most decorated awards in the British Commonwealth. One of the issue focused on the JFK assassination was whether or not he would have won his next election. The 1964 presidential election could have had a totally different result if JFK would have ran for it. According to Yahoo News “JFK had a popularity rating that was 58 percent right before his assassination”. Also, according to constitution center, “that number was higher than Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama, five presidents who won re-election.” The world today would have been different if JFK wouldn 't have been assassinated because Lyndon Baines Johnson would not have been elected during the 1964 election.
On May 27, 1943, the eleven crewmembers of the Green Hornet crash-landed in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, leaving the three surviving men stranded. For the next two years, Louis Zamperini, one of the survivors and the bombardier of the plane, would become a prisoner of war to the Japanese and suffer countless tortures. Though the Geneva Convention theoretically administrated the treatment of prisoners of war, not all POW camps adhered to its rules. Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand chronicles Louis’s story and depicts how the differences in culture of two nations affected the lives of the thousands of American soldiers imprisoned in Japan during World War II. Louis was captured by the Japanese after he survived for forty-seven days on the open ocean with minimal supplies.
Having been awarded over thirty combat awards Murphy is a great example of American patriotism. While his medals are too many to list individually, some of his more distinguished awards included three Purple Hearts, the Congressional Medal of Honor, and the Medal for Valor. The American patriot defended his country’s pride and honor killing over 50 Germans and ordering artillery attacks on many more. Murphy’s men in shock explained, “It was the greatest display of guts and courage I have ever seen” (Audie Murphy Biography). Murphy was asked to stop fighting while he encountered a leg injury, malaria, and gangrene; Audie refused to stop battling for his beloved country.
The most obvious act of bravery would be the fighting itself – charging into enemy fire to protect innocent people – but there are other ways in which the Anzacs showed courage. One of the most famous examples of this would be the story of Simpson and his donkey. Jack Simpson Kirkpatrick was a field ambulance stretcher bearer, and it was his job to go into dangerous ground and retrieve and treat injured soldiers. Simpson is one of the most famous and remembered men as he not only fulfilled the requirements of his position, he did so without hesitation and without fear. He was said to be always singing and whistling, and seemed to be accepting of the extreme danger he put himself in to save others.
In June 1944 there was an attack that would last 3 months. It was called D-Day. The Americold General Omar Bradley had participated in the attack and had a chance to lose his life because he joined his troops during the middle of the attack. There were more than 156,000 soldiers that were fighting there those three months ("D-Day." History.com). While Bradley didn’t lose his life, the fact that Bradley was willing to join his troops during the battle, instead of waiting in Britain like most of the generals did, shows that Bradley was a brave man and was willing to do anything to win and ensure freedom for his country and others.
William Prescott showed Great determination when he kept fighting against the British army even though he knew they were way outnumbered, in the Battle of Bunker Hill. Nancy Hart showed patriotism when 6 redcoats came in her house and she killed them. Deborah Sampson was a hero to all women, she showed the girls can fight in the war too. Musician and astronomer, William Herschel, changed the way we look at the sky in the 1780’s. In 1781, Herschel went on an adventure to construct a telescope with bigger reflecting mirrors than had ever been used before (Hoskin). He made a telescope that was top of the line for that time. He discovered Uranus, which was the first planet to be discovered in a very long time (Upgren). Many people inspired and aided Herschel’s desire to study astronomy.
It 's not just the soldiers throwing themselves on top of expositions to save other who deserves to be recognized as heroes, it 's about all of the small sacrifices they make everyday that show how truly brave our soldiers are.
