The compromise of 1850 began with a chain of events starting when gold was discovered in California in 1848. Gold was first discovered by a man named James Wilson marshal (), Marshal found this gold along the American river NE of what is now Sacramento. No one believed this man that there was gold in that area. Sometime later another man, Sam Brannan; a store keeper in Sutter creek, found more gold and reported it to the San Francisco news peoples. Soon after everyone came to believe that there was actual gold in California. This gold rush is what increased the population in California. People came from all over to dig for gold. At the time of the gold rush there were many of other issues going on in the union, also known as the United States, such as different territory wars, other compromises being debated out, and slavery. Slavery was a major controversy during this time and eventually led to other major events. When California petitioned to enter the union there was a bit of uproar. There were many difference of views on whether California should be a slave state or a free state. The south wanted California to be slave and the north wanted the opposite. January 29, 1850, Henry Clay (great compromiser, Missouri compromise) comes along and brings up the idea of a Compromise between the states.
