“Reasons To Be Pretty”, is the play chosen for the director’s analysis essay. This play was written by Neil LaBute and was first performed in 2008.
The story takes place during the spring in present day Pittsburgh. Scene 1 takes place in the middle of the day and finds Steph and Greg arguing. Scene two, is held near midnight, as Kent and Greg are on their “lunch” break while working the night shift. Scene 3 is another day setting, with Greg and Steph meeting at the mall and have a heated discussion. Scene four takes place during the night shift with Kent, Carly and Greg working. Scene five is also in the evening, and Greg happens to see Steph at a restaurant as he is in the vicinity. Scene six is again a nightshift scene with Carly and Greg …show more content…

The play is also written in connotative form, the characters speak as people do in everyday life, as well as the use of curse words and vulgar language. The grammar in the play is decent, but as mentioned earlier, the characters do speak as everyday people and there is some dialect, as well. There are a few speeches made during the play, but a major one occurs when Steph goes off on Greg while they are at the mall. LaBute’s structure of lines are somewhat odd and difficult to understand at first. The conversations and dialogue between the characters are broken up by slashes, after each slash you then proceed to the next characters line and then back to the previous character’s line in reading the …show more content…

This leads to Greg expressing his anger and frustration to Kent, in regards to Carly having told Steph that she had overheard Greg’s remarks about her face being “regular.” Greg and Steph then get into a heated argument at the mall and then again at a restaurant where Steph hits Greg, which is the climax of the play as we find out that Steph is seeing another guy, with this all coming about due to the overheard conversation. Later in the play, Kent and Greg get into a fist fight at the ballpark because Greg is frustrated with Kent’s decision to run-around on Carly with another
