In the book that handle is known as “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller, goes into detail about what happened in the Salem WItch trials in the duration of 1692. Miller used the Red Scare as motivation to write the book. In the book Abigail and some of her friends are dancing in the woods, when Mr. Parris ( her uncle) catches them. At this point Betty, Mr. Parris daughter and Abigail’s cousin, faints.
She is another victim to the witch trial investigations and got accused by Mrs. Ann Putnam, the wife of Thomas Putnam. Mrs. Putnam accused Rebecca out of jealousy and believed that she is responsible for the death of her seven infant children; which led her to accused Rebecca being a witch. Mrs. Putnam is jealous of Rebecca, seeing that Rebecca had many successful labor, while many of her had been unsuccessful. Proctor saw her when Deputy Governor Danforth, the main judge in the witchcraft trials, brought her in. Danforth brought her in hopes of getting Rebecca to confess like Proctor; however his plan backfired on him.
If I were taking advice from someone, I would listen to the person with the most experience and knowledge on the subject. In Arthur MIller's "The Crucible" Rebecca Nurse seems the most fit to hold that role. Since she is a peacemaker, wise and valued she is very important in the community. Rebecca is wise to child care.
For my life now lies in your grasp… " Though confronting passing, Rebecca Nurse never gave in and kept on arguing guiltlessness, never losing her religious confidence. Indeed, even in her March 24th, 1692 affirmation, she said "I can say before my Eternal father I am pure, and God will clear my innocency" and "I have no body to look to yet God," demonstrating her solid will and determined soul not to confer a wrongdoing against God. Without this solid feeling of religious uprightness, the Salem Witch Trials could have been finished
However, she was still accused of a witch because her outstanding reputation as “Puritan perfection” intimidated the supremacy of male in the Puritan society. Rebecca’s success and prosperity, and links to those opposed to the Putnams and Parris also provoked her opponents’ jealousy, anger and revenge, and caused her to be the victim of witch hunt (Hill 90-91). In Salem society, women were discriminated, expected to be no authority and wealth, and viewed as easier to be controlled by the devil and inferior to men (Mammone). Therefore, even though Rebecca was an innocent and respectable woman, she could not prevail over men in a male dominated society.
In The Crucible, a lot of characters were not judged fairly. Most of them were jailed or killed and it provided little proof of witchcraft. One character for example was Rebecca Nurse. Rebecca was first brought to trial when her name was brought up into court and so she was brought in to determine if she was capable of witchcraft or not. During the trial, Mary Warren pretended that Rebecca has summoned her soul to choke her.
Also, since The Crucible was written to be parallel to McCarthyism, the same idea is shown. The same situation can be seen in The Crucible as Arthur Miller was influenced by the events that occurred during McCarthyism. In the Crucible, anyone whose name that had been mentioned underwent an investigation and was asked to prove that they were not partaking in witchcraft. Because this task was impossible, the court made rash decisions such as sending people to jail or sentencing them to be hanged. This scenario is seen in the crucible when Rebecca Nurse is accused.
If one person starts lying, then the next, and so on and so forth they would all “burn together” in a sense. Rebecca never wanted the witch hunt, she didn’t even believe betty was bewitched in Act I. Rebecca wanted to remember but most of all she wanted to be part of the solution and part of the reason it all stopped. Although things did not go in her favor she was indeed an crucial part to the ending of the accusations. Both John Proctor and her sacrifice helped prove to the village folk that this witch hunt was
Rebecca Nurse was blamed for the death of all of Ann Putnam’s children, except for one. The events also caused numerous people to be convicted of witchcraft, some of them being executed. Two of the most notable people convicted in the play were John Procter, condemned for adultery and later hung, and Tituba, who confessed, saving her own life.
