1.0 Introduction
The supervision of prisoners is an important element of all prisons. Depending on the model of supervision, it can be limited or promoted by the design of a prison, the philosophy of a prison, and how prison staff manage prisoners. These three aspects will be discussed below. Further on, we will discuss the two main models of supervision that are used around the world. First is the direct supervision model (DS), and second is indirect supervision (IDS). Some prison either completely pick one over the other, and there are others that incorporate both models, creating a ‘hybrid’. For Recallier, we will be using a direct supervision model, and we will discuss the reasons for this below.

If a philosophy is that of punishment and the housing of serious prisoners, then the way in supervising would be different than if the philosophy is the rehabilitation of prisoners. If the purpose is to just house prisoners, then one would look to finding the cheapest and easiest to run model. If the purpose is to rehabilitate, then you would consider a model that helps to promotes rehabilitation, and not one that negatively impacts prisoners’ rehabilitation. The majority of prisoners that will be involved with the Recallier facility have spent a large amount of time in punitive prisons around the state. At Recallier, the direct supervision model will allow prisoners to have some privacy from stricter supervision, with their only supervision being wandering Recallier officers. This means that Recallier can simulate the outside world for prisoners, in a separate and controlled environment away from the general
