Reconstruction from 1865 to 1877 aimed to reunify, or rather reconstruct, the Union following the Civil War and abolishment of slavery. The goal of Abraham Lincoln, the president who introduced the 10% plan and charted the Freedmen’s Bureau, was to introduce the Confederate States back into the United States, ensure their loyalty, and improve Black people’s conditions. The ratification of the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments, as well as the establishment of the Freedmen’s Bureau and other educational reforms, gave way to a rise of radical Republicanism that introduced bold and transformative actions that were unheard of. One of the most well-known ones is the Ku Klux Klan. The Ku Klux Klan was a white supremacist terrorist group that committed heinous acts against African-Americans and white sympathizers. Due to the abolishment of slavery, they wanted to reinstate white superiority and black economic and political instability. Although Congress attempted to combat the KKK with the Force Acts of 1870, their involvement eventually progressed into the Jim Crow Era. The KKK not only lynched and threatened thousands of people, but they practiced voter intimidation tactics in attempts to undo what Reconstruction had established. Not only did citizen-led formations try to stop black equality, but the legislature did as well. For example, literacy tests and the Grandfather Clause, which said that only those whose grandfather had the right to vote could vote, prevented black men from voting. Many white-dominated state legislatures in states like Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Virginia passed this.
