The years 1865 to 1877 were a time called Reconstruction. Reconstruction was the period after the Civil War when laws were passed designed to rebuild the country specifically in the Southern United States. For some, this was a time to grant civil rights to freedmen. These people were called Radical Republicans who believed that we should punish the South for causing war and taking away their property. But even though the laws stated that black people had more rights, people found loopholes and ways to take away these people's basic rights. Even though there were some successes of Reconstruction, it was ultimately a failure because of social, economic, and political reasons. We took a step forward by abolishing slavery, but moved back to square one when we enslaved over 50,000 more black Americans. Black codes were also a way to restrict black Americans' rights.
