The years 1865 to 1877 were a time called Reconstruction. Reconstruction was the period after the Civil War when laws were passed designed to rebuild the country specifically in the Southern United States. For some, this was a time to grant civil rights to freedmen. These people were called Radical Republicans who believed that we should punish the South for causing war and taking away their property. But even though the laws stated that black people had more rights, people found loopholes and ways to take away these people's basic rights. Even though there were some successes of Reconstruction, it was ultimately a failure because of social, economic, and political reasons. A. Then, the syllables are. The reason this is a failure of reconstruction is because we moved backward. We took a step forward by abolishing slavery, but moved back to square one when we enslaved over 50,000 more black Americans. Black codes were also a way to restrict black Americans' rights. An example of what these laws state is “No negro or freedmen shall be permitted to rent or keep a house in town under any circumstances” (Doc. H). Then, the syllables are. What this is trying to say is that no black American can own property whatsoever. We freed these men, gave them no money, no property, and nowhere to go, and refused to even let them own property. Where are they supposed to go? This is yet another example of how reconstruction failed for social reasons. But reconstruction was not only a failure socially, it failed in many ways economically as well. The Freedmen’s Bureau was an organization that provided, food, housing, medical aid, established schools, and offered legal assistance to freedmen.
