After watching the movie “Recount” about the 2000 presidential election, a lot of flags were raised to me. It seemed like a hectic attempt of each party to get what they wanted and a rigged recount by those for the Republican candidate George W. Bush. The election of 2000 took place on November 7, 2000 and was between Democratic candidate Al Gore and Republican candidate George W. Bush. All seemed well in this election and it was a very close race which is why it was so controversial. In this close race, many elderly voters (mainly in Palm Beach) were mistakenly voting for Pat Buchanan, thinking that they were choosing Al Gore. This percentage called for a mandatory recount due to it being such a low percentage and sparked the outrage of the Republicans. This is where the whole election becomes suspicious. This whole process was one of rule bending and manipulation of rules. After battles in court to try and get a recount, it was granted to the Democratic party. This again upset the Republicans and so they appealed and tried to make the process take longer so they would miss their given deadline. They tried everything in their control to make the process take as long as possible, even getting the court to pause the recount days before the deadline to tend to the appeal. This to me shows that the court also wanted Bush to win so they were lenient and gave them the pause they wanted. When the recount resumed it was a race against the clock to try and shrink the difference of votes, now down to about 300. County by County this began to consistently lower and with a significant amount of counties left it was looking hopeful. But that race was getting so close and it was very narrow as they were now down to 98
