Mary Rowlandson’s A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson has events which reinforce the stereotypical view of Native Americans in colonial times; however, she also has occasions when she encounters behavior contradicting her views. Many white settlers view Native Americans as godless barbarians and Rowlandson highlights that view with her account of the attack and subsequent forced march through the wilderness. The events in the first few days of captivity paint a picture of vicious killers and tormenters of Christians.
One of the texts, “I am Not The Indian You Had In Mind” by Thomas King is about a Native American’s experience while the other text, “The Danger Of A Single Story” by Chimamanda Adichie is about a Nigerian American’s experience. This shows the contrast in writing between these two authors. Here,
Throughout history, there have been many literary studies that focused on the culture and traditions of Native Americans. Native writers have worked painstakingly on tribal histories, and their works have made us realize that we have not learned the full story of the Native American tribes. Deborah Miranda has written a collective tribal memoir, “Bad Indians”, drawing on ancestral memory that revealed aspects of an indigenous worldview and contributed to update our understanding of the mission system, settler colonialism and histories of American Indians about how they underwent cruel violence and exploitation. Her memoir successfully addressed past grievances of colonialism and also recognized and honored indigenous knowledge and identity.

“The Iroquois Creation Story” written by author David Cusick and “A Brief and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia” written by author Thomas Harriot both show how power can be used in different ways to change the course of events and the ability to control a nation. “The Iroquois Creation Story” shows power which caused a conflict between good and evil, who were known as the good mind and bad mind. “A Brief and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia” shows that the British were stereotyping the Native Americans to show the British have more power. The Native American story shows how power can create, while the British story shows that power can be used to convince others of their superiority.
Petalesharo’s writing reflected the treatment of Native Americans during the 1800s. Being a Native American himself, Petalesharo was able to give perspective on a point in history typically viewed from a white man’s opinion. The excerpt “Petalesharo” explains how the Native American was able “to prevent young women captured by other tribes from being sacrificed”, making Petalesharo well liked by the Americans (588). Petalesharo gave the “Speech of the Pawnee Chief” infront of Americans to convey the differences between Native Americans and Americans through emotion, logic, and credibility, which showed how the two groups will never be the same, but still can coexist in the world together.
Jane Tompkins, when researching about Indians while preparing to teach a course on colonial America, encountered a problem. This problem was that if the events of history were determined by the “observer’s frame of reference”, then we might never know what really happened. To begin with, Tompkins was just choosing which authors to believe, but then she realized that the problem was far more complicated than that. Faced with excessive amount of point of views, she approached primary sources for clarification, only to find out that they duplicated the problem all over again. Her research commenced with Errand into the Wilderness by Perry Miller, just to find out he overlooks the fact that there were people who inhabited the lands he was studying.
The narrative offers an account which can be used to describe the particularly puritan society based on the ideals of Christianity and the European culture. It offers a female perspective of the Native Americans who showed no respect to the other religious groups. The narrator makes serious observation about her captors noting the cultural differences as well as expectations from one another in the society. However, prejudice is evident throughout the text which makes the narratives unreliable in their details besides being written after the event had already happened which means that the narrator had was free to alter the events to create an account that favored her. Nonetheless, the narrative remains factually and historically useful in providing the insights into the tactics used by the Native Americans
Analyzing Captivity Stories: How Different Tones Support Different Themes In A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson, Mary Rowlandson retells her story as a captive of the Wampanoag Indians. In Louise Erdrich’s poem “Captivity”, Erdrich responds to Rowlandson by telling a story about a captive of a Native American tribe through the eyes of the captive. Throughout their stories, both authors utilize diction to produce a specific tone that conveys their overall theme. Through analysis of both authors’ diction choice, it is evident that Rowlandson’s hopeful tone supports her theme of exclusive belief in God, whereas Erdrich’s desperate tone supports her message that beliefs are susceptible to change.
In Western stories, Native people are illustrated as antagonists and are never seen as the main characters. Native people are the other side of the so-called frontier, where wildness, savagery and chaos are met. Western stories do not represent native people fairly. The typical archetype of American Indians in western stories has influenced and created stereotypes about Native people that still remain in nowadays society. In the story of Louis L’Amour, “The Gift of Cochise”, Native people, also called ‘the other’, are represented more fairly compared to typical Westerns which portray them as non-civilized and savage.

The speech describes the feelings that were caused by the religious intolerance from the Americans. Currently, the United States have started to appreciate the impacts of the Native Americans and other minorities in history. However, a piece of history that has been quite hidden is the religious intolerance of Native Americans. Chief Red Jacket utilizes repetition, pathos, and rhetorical questions to convince the Americans to tolerate the religion of the Native Americans.
They are often labeled as uncivilized barbarians, which is a solely false accusation against them. This paper aims to address the similarities between Native American beliefs and the beliefs of other cultures based on The Iroquois Creation Story in order to defeat the stereotype that Natives are regularly defined by. His unique style allows for the use of personal anecdotes and requires that he breaks the proverbial fourth wall to communicate with the reader directly, to create the conversational feel of the oral tradition.
Science journalist, Charles C. Mann, had successfully achieved his argumentative purpose about the “Coming of Age in the Dawnland.” Mann’s overall purpose of writing this argumentative was to show readers that there’s more to than just being called or being stereotyped as a savage- a cynical being. These beings are stereotyped into being called Indians, or Native Americans (as they are shorthand names), but they would rather be identified by their own tribe name. Charles Mann had talked about only one person in general but others as well without naming them. Mann had talked about an Indian named Tisquantum, but he, himself, does not want to be recognized as one; to be more recognized as the “first and foremost as a citizen of Patuxet,”(Mann 24).
