Thirteen years after Wilson published his book, a movie based on the book was filmed. The story revolves around a twelve-year-old boy named Billy Colman who works and saves money over a few years in order to buy two Redbone Coon hounds. Within the time Billy spends with his dogs, he experiences both memorable and scary moments. He spent most of his time hunting with his hounds, until one day, he entered a coon hunting championship.

The setting of a rural sawmill, the rough atmosphere of those that surround Stephen, and his inner conflicts play a significant role in creating such mood and tone. Eugene shows his disappointment and anger towards his son by throwing the missal at his son which is a book that contains text that is used in the Catholic Mass throughout the year.
