Redemption is compensating the things that are once lost. In the circumstance of human relationship, redemption is forgiveness. One can only make up for his or her mistake by being forgiven, meanwhile, one can finally put down anger and finds peace by forgiving. There are too many examples in the history that teaches us the importance of forgiveness and the fact that revenge and hate cannot solve any problem but create new hate. However, it is not always easy for us to forgive others and love them just like before. This is why the story of Chris Herren is a story of forgiveness. Chris lived a life that was already decided and his life lacked motivation and purposes. Drugs were a way for him to escape. To him, losing earthy things like money and repute didn’t help realize how serious his problems were. The only way to cure him is to make him realize that, which is to take away what he valued the most: his family. In the film, Heather said that both her and Chris were sick. Although Chris went back to the caring center and let everyone down again and again, Heather forgot Chris unconditionally because she loves him. Under a circumstance that most women will choose to leave, Heather still honored her marriage vows by standing next to Chris and helping him as much as she can. Loving someone is not just giving but making the person a better person. Love is not just sugar and rainbow. Admonishing is also a part of it. In my personal opinion, Heather’s early decision of staying with Chris is not the best choice because Chris back then did not deserve her forgiveness. Sometimes leaving is for a better reunion. Chris eventually realized what is the thing he can sacrifice anything for: his wife and kids. One can only forgiven if he or she is truly sorry and desires to make up for the mistakes.
I believe that everyone deserve a second chance as long as he or she is truly sorry and abled to sacrifice for making up the mistakes. Human are not prefect, which means we make mistakes. Learning from the mistakes separate human from animals. Heather didn’t give up Chris when everyone thought he is just a junky. She knew deep in his heart, he is still the Chris she failed in love with and worth saving. None of us are completely good or evil. As long as there is still hope for a soul to return to the right track, he should be given a second
