At Songa Mbele children’s center, there was so much to do because the workforce was limited as compared to work loads. I had so much to do during my 10 weeks of service and that made me go an extra mile to do more than what was expected. My supervisor assigned me work weekly but in case there was something that needed to be done within that week, then I was flexible to change my area of work. Some of the activities I did include:
Working in the kitchen area where I cooked for the children and staff. In this unit, I made sure all the children are well placed in their special chairs and well tied as most of them could not support themselves while sited. I also sang for them to cheer up their mood and sometimes help them learn communication techniques through the help of their Special Education Professional Ms. Beatrice who was the main teacher for the daycare unit. Children in this unit cannot feed themselves as they are completely disabled and so I helped in feeding the children. I also washed their baby feeders after meals.
I also helped in sweeping and mopping of different areas within the school. The compound, Veranda and corridors of the entire center needed to be swept every morning. The classrooms, administration offices, dining hall, resting rooms, washrooms needed to be mopped to ensure the place was clean. It has taught me what really serving the community involves. This experience I have gained from such a voluntary service especially with such innocent and adorable children is as an eye opener as I am able to see some of the challenges faced by the society in this world. Listening to the stories of how most children live within the slum area is surely so touching imagining that many families experience such difficulties in real life.
Volunteering has increases my reasoning as this has helped me to think about various challenging social problems in our community and how I can find solutions for them. Through that I am able to understand any real-life situation, able to think about it critically and logically and be able to get a solution for that situation. For example, understanding children who were abandoned by their parents, knowing their feelings and trying to relate with them and make them good boys and girls and so the future
