In my time away from the university I have learned to embrace myself for who I truly am and what I am capable of. I decided I wanted to focus on my career while keep up my volunteering I started in school. I compelled myself to make all necessary sacrifices to be successful while sticking to my morals. I have gained a passion for equality and fighting for what is right and just, believing everyone should have a chance at the American dream; the pursuit of happiness. I gained a new work ethic, by focusing my time on moving up the ladder in my job. I become more motivated and developed a hunger for success. This program allowed me to turn my biggest academic shortcomings into my greatest skills. In AVID they teach you to take Cornell notes, why the process seems tedious at first they want you to only take your notes in that format. Note taking was still something I struggled with until my junior year of high school, when I came to the realization that I need to structure my notes differently for each subject. Now my note taking skills are phenomenal and can be used to easily guide someone through a lecture as well as answer any questions I may have pertaining to the lecture. Just like my note taking skill, my organization skill is something I now strive to be excellent in. I have come to learn the more I keep my binders in an orderly fashion, use my planner daily, and stick to a very strict and consistent regimen I tend to be more successful. Although this was a skill I did not master until after my dismissal from the university, when I started working full time and still had my responsibilities to help take care of my brother. My biggest challenge that I am still working to overcome is being self-motivated. I have learned that I cannot rely on people to always cheer for me, and that I should never expect anyone to give me the things I need in life.
