I am a 8th grade student at Viking Middle School who has always been passionate about race issues and bullying of any sorts. I have seen it first hand it I know that people are still insensitive to the topic about racism. I know racism is not a disease that we can just cure and I also know that it is something that has been taught for years. But despite the endless amount of obstacles in our way, I am willing to make an effort to end racism. Not to long ago, I was reading a book in my language arts class named The Hate U Give. It touched on racism, police brutality, and gang leaders. It was a form of activism as I felt like it gave me a voice. Once we had three chapters left, the book was banned because of the language it uses. I do believe that, that was not the only reason. I’m not claiming my principal and the educational leaders of my school racist. I think they’ve interpreted the book wrong. A pediatrician from the University of California at Riverside, Ashaunta Anderson, found that people who have experienced racism are more likely to experience depression and anxiety. The last thing anyone should want to have is bad mental health. She also found that racism can increase stress hormones that weaken the body’s immune. Racism can easily ruin people’s lives mentally and physically. And to my surprise Illinois is the 16th more racist state in America with over 30 active discriminating groups. I can admit to diversity in the schools in Illinois, but that is not the problem. There as been 3 recently reported racist incidents at schools locally around my area.
