Understanding the frames in an organization is crucial. As Bolman and Deal described in their book Reframing Organizations Artistry, Choice and Leadership, “ They (frames) help us decipher the full array of significant clues, capturing a more comprehensive picture of what’s going on and what to do”. Firstly, this project will be focus on the symbolic frame, this frame will provide a better understanding of the culture within the organization. As Bolman and Deal describe “ Culture forms the superglue that bonds an organization, unites people and help accomplish desired ends”. For example, take symbols. As Bolman and Deal state “A symbol is something that stands for or suggests something else; it conveys socially constructed meanings beyond its intrinsic or obvious functional use” (Zott and Huy, 2007, p. 72). In The Centro de la Raza, symbols are essential to preserve the empowering culture of inclusion (Miguel Maestas, 2016) . Everything from the spacial spaces, structure, personnel to the website represents the strong influence of a culture that appreciates multiculturalism, inclusion and acceptance. As Miguel Maestas, Housing and Economic Development Director, “The symbols within the organization could be found everywhere; From the Historic building, the slogan, the use of Spanish and the shared culture” (Centro de la Raza, 2017). The historic building is part of the program “ Our History, Our community”. This program provides interpretive materials for the artwork and events from El Centro de la Raza’s history ( Centro de la Raza, 2017). Moreover, the historical value that the organization slogan represents completely the picture mission/vision alignment. These ones are mostly focused on sharing, empowerment, cultural recapturing, and struggling all forms of racism, sexism, individualism, ageism, and violence. ( Centro de la Raza, 2017). These principles are internalized in the organization and act like its constitution. They were mainly developed thanks to different Latino communities. During 1972, in the early years of the organization, The Chilean communities ( exiled in Seattle due to the dictatorship in Chile) procreated and promoting them. The main objective was to incorporate a more inclusive and multicultural agenda into the organization. (Maestas, 2016). Several awards such as the Diversity Spirit Award to Roberto Maestas for leadership and active support of diversity in the workplace and community, and Multicultural Participation Program of the Year. - Pacific Northwest Section, are the proof that the organization is still maintaining its multicultural agenda. ( El Centro de la Raza, 2017). As Bolman and Deal describe leadership, “ Managers who understand the significance of symbols and know how to evoke spirit and soul can shape more cohesive and effective organizations.”. Good leadership and management are essential for the organization. In El Centro de la Raza, leadership is guided by example.
