(STEWE-1) One key detail is how many possession the refugees have. “Most refugee children wear clothing that has been handed down several times. They wear everything until it is more holes than fabric, or until it doesn't cover their growing bodies any longer, and then is passed on to the next smaller child. New clothes are unusual” (190). New isn't a word refugees get to hear often because of a lack of possessions. The possessions they do have get used until they are broken and completely unusable anymore. (STEWE-2) Another detail that accurately portrayed refugees was the anticipation for food and water. “ Khalida spends entire days waiting in lines- first for drinking water, which we still get from the volunteers at the place where we collect our food, and then again for whatever food has arrived from Peshawar” (148). Refugees have to spend so much time waiting for basic materials that are key to their survival. When the food arrives the people they once were change instantly. “The next thing I know, there is shouting and jostling and the air is mixed with dust. A wagonload of apples has arrived from across the border, and the crowd, which has been quiet and orderly the night before, clamors and elbows until the fruit is gone” (146). Some refugees who were once peaceful become wild when the food arrives. They forget about being nice and kind and only think about
