In Alma 41 he is talking to his son corriantumr who has just committed some serious sins. His way to help him repent and return to doing what is right is to teach him the true doctrine of the atonement. As Alma instructs his son, we learn many vital truths that can apply to us today. Men will be judged according to his works. The problem is this is a bad thing. 5 And men are instructed sufficiently that they know good from evil. And the law is given unto men. When you are immersed in the waters of baptism you are cleaned of your sins and become a new member of God’s kingdom. This starts you on the path to returning and living with our Father in Heaven. Baptism in the third step to the Celestial Kingdom. The Fourth Article of faith is: We believe the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are First faith I the Lord Jesus Christ.
