History Vocab Chapter 2 1. Mesopotamia- comes from two greek words meaning “the land between the two rivers”. These rivers were the Tigris and Euphrates. This is where modern day iraq is. It is important because the rivers provided the first cultivators with irrigation which led them to a food surplus.
Between “The Babylonian Creation Epic” and “Theogony” there are many similarities and differences that can be found. One similarity between these two is the idea of two beings, Tiamat and Apsu (fresh and salt water) and Gaia and Ouranos (earth and sky) who couple together and give birth to the first gods. In Gaia and Ouranos’s case, these ‘gods’ are called Titans. In the Babylonian story Marduk, a son of the gods, kills Tiamat and creates humankind from the blood of one of the gods who stood on her side. Whereas in “Theogony” Ouranos is hated by all of his children and ends up castrated by his son Kronos.

The God of the Hebrews differed from pagan gods in numerous ways. The God of the Hebrews explicitly stated multiple times throughout the bible that there is only one God. “Wherefore thou art great, O LORD God; for there is none like thee, neither is there any God besides thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears” (2 Samuel 7:22). Since the Hebrews had one God, He was omnipotent. “It is he who made the earth by his power, who established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding stretched out the heavens” (Jeremiah 10:12).
To me, this makes sense but there is still can be differences of opinion, what all gods despise is unholy, which would then make what the gods love be holy to them. The third definition differs from the second because problems in the second are that not all the gods are going to agree with what is dear to them and then in the third, you will be unable to know what all the gods love or what they hate. No this definition does not improve on the second because you are then still running into the same problem that you are unable to speak for the gods and decide what is either dear to them or what they can all agree is love. Although the third definition somewhat improves onto the second, it is still inadequate. This definition that Euthyphro gives still cannot be used in a argument because of the speculation or opinions that could all be formed.

In the novel Akhenaten: Dweller in Truth, the main character, Akhenaten, is strongly connected to religion and the main theme of the novel is religion. In the play, Equus, the main character, Alan, is also very connected to his religion. Alan and Akhenaten both let their religious views play such huge roles in their lives, which ultimately leads to their downfalls. While on the surface, the religion of both Akhenaten and Alan have stark contrasts, once digging deeper similarities begin to appear. The religions of the two characters aren’t similar in practice, but in the formulation of the religions, the two characters both project their issues into the foundation of the religion.
After explaining the beliefs of Dualism and Pantheism, Lewis raised a question: "If a good God made the world why has it gone wrong?" According to him, there are two views that face all the facts. Hesiod’s account of creation, as outlined in the Theogony offers one of the most detailed and accepted theories of creation in the Greek culture. On the other hand, the Biblical account of creation, regarded as a Hebrew culture creation account, is to date one of the most widely acknowledged and accepted versions across various cultures seeking explanations for the origin of life and the earth. However, even though these creation accounts originate from two different cultures, they share some thought-provoking parallels in terms of their content and intentions, as well as some contrasts that make each of the creation accounts unique. Both Hesiod’s and the biblical creation accounts are similar in that they argue that prior to the beginning of creation events, the earth was merely a void that had no shape or form and this void was filled with darkness.
Hinduism: Polytheistic or Monotheistic? Regarded as the 3rd largest religion in the world, originating back to 2750-1750 BCE, Hinduism is a very unique religion practiced mostly by India (80 Percent). When asking the question whether this religion is polytheistic or monotheistic, it can be said that Hinduism can really be considered both of these terms due to different aspects. Hinduism is polytheistic, meaning that this religion worships many different gods all containing different elements, but Hinduism also is monotheistic, as its origins come from one sacred book, the Bhagavad Gita. Hinduism worshipers believe in many different gods, and worshipers participate in different pujas (rituals) to these gods.

In this essay I will be comparing and contrasting the creation myths of Brahma, the Hindu Creator God, and The Ennead of Heliopolis of Ancient Egypt. I will be highlighting the following; how, according to these cultures, did the world begin, how did humans originate, are there any thematic similarities between the creation myths of these two cultures, what are the most striking differences and do they have any beliefs about how the world will end, or do they believe in some kind of cyclical renewal of creation. In the history of the hebrews the religion has displayed a remarkable adaptability and continuity. Starting when God flooded the world and spared nobody but Noah and his family, when God had Abraham leave Mesopotamia and settle in the land of the Canaanites, And when God had Moses lead his people out of slavery and into the promised land. All of these points change the face of the Hebrew culture and their religion. The Hebrews history was remarkable which they managed to survive as people and as a culture. From the Hebrews point of view the whole purpose was to illuminate their relationship with God When God was in the picture with the Hebrews things became different, God did not allow more than one god which is called monotheism.
