When Akhenaton, previously named Amenophis IV after his father and the highest God at the time, assumed the throne in 1352 BC he launched a religious revolution. It applied a change from polytheism to monotheism, which was never before been seen in Egypt. The worshipping of the sun deity Aton began. He changed his name to Akhenaton which means "Aton is pleased." The key was that he made him and his wife the only humans on earth that represent Aton. This upset the entire priesthood of Egypt.
