After being told by the witches that he would become Thane of Cawdor and eventually King Macbeth is promoted to thane of Cawdor. This makes Macbeth think that what they said about him being king is true as well. Throughout Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, Macbeth’s wife, is the catalyst that unlocks Macbeth’s evil ambitions. Shakespeare shows that Macbeth although very great in battle somewhat lacks the motivation to do what is necessary for him to become king. In act one scene five, Macbeth sends a letter to Lady Macbeth. In this letter Macbeth tells her about his meeting with the witches.
