Roles Reversed In Macbeth by William Shakespeare, the protagonist, Macbeth, starts as a loyal warrior but as the plot progresses, he becomes corrupt, narcissistic, and numb. His wife, Lady Macbeth, starts as a manipulative and greedy woman. As Macbeth's actions become more and more questionable, she begins to feel fear for what he has become due to her encouragement. By the end of the play, Lady Macbeth is frightened by what Macbeth has transformed into. The main characters, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, switch personalities throughout the course of the play. As the prophecy consumes his mind, Macbeth writes a letter describing to Lady Macbeth what he had been told by the witches. This is the start of Lady Macbeth’s plot to gain power. She is determined to see Macbeth become king. The prophecies get them both thinking about their next course of action, but they both have different approaches to fulfilling the prophecy. Macbeth initially was hesitant about murdering King Duncan and had his doubts and moral qualms. He had a sense of loyalty towards King Duncan because he had been awarded Thane of Cawdor and felt gratitude towards him for bestowing him with this position and honor. He was also aware that, morally, it was completely wrong to murder someone. As shown after, Macbeth tells Lady Macbeth “We will proceed no further in this business. He hath honored me of late” (Shakespeare 1.7: 34-35). He decided not to go through with Lady Macbeth's proposed plan. He could not kill anyone, especially someone as prestigious as King Duncan.
