Religion In Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre

“Jane Eyre” as a novel has many themes within it. The reader can see the theme of romance, between Jane and Rochester. The theme of suffering, in which Jane suffers from depression and loneliness with her parents dying, and helen who is her best friend also dies. The theme of deceit, with Rochester and his unspoken wife, and how Ms. Reed did not tell Jane she still has relatives who are alive, John Reed and the Rivers, Etc. But one theme that seems to be prominent in this novel is Religion. This is because when Jane was abused as a child, family and friends dying all around her, and even leaving the love of her life, Jane prayed to God for things to get better, accepting God’s plan for her. The theme of religion also comes up numerous times because of the author Charlotte Bronte had a religious lifestyle with her father being a priest, and how she felt the same way she portrayed Jane when it came …show more content…

The reader can see this “plan” whenever Jane is in some sort of dilemma and asks for God's guidance , with an answer the reader does not recognize fully. The reason for this unclear path Jane has taken is because God wants her to make decisions based on her morals and beliefs. Jane realizes just because God has put her in a great position in life does not mean that God wants her there forever. As the reader you can see this is evident through the many times when Jane must leave a location to find a better life, Jane leaving Gateshead to Lowood, leaving Lowood for Thornfield, and from Thronfield to Marsh end. Jane relied on religion to survive throughout her life, praying daily to make hard decisions that came her way.
