This or that no in between; Puritans followed this religiously in both senses of the term.
Puritans had a tightly knit society centered around religion. God ruled the Puritans He was the
Government and anyone who committed an act even slightly astray from those condoned by the
Church were persecuted horrendously. The Crucible takes place in Puritan -Salem Massachusetts
A like minded town with just the perfect characteristics for hysteria to grow and spread.

God was seen as the almighty by almost the entire population of Puritan-Salem which created a sort of bubble society. The tightly-knit town let ideas grow and go without question due to the townsman's identical beliefs. Miller emphasizes this idea by preaching how God has great powers “God will not let you clean your hands of this”. The entirety of the town believed these ideas of His power, and when something relating to Devil came up in the village they would all go up into a riot. This frenzy allowed the surge of hysteria that is the witchery accusations to live and strengthen due to no one thinking of the situation from a different way. Puritans view the common man as a sinner, a man who can only do wrong if he does not have god.Puritans had a way of making their followers do as they please in some colonial Puritan sermons fear is used to persuade the audience into many things. Jonathan Edwards was a New England man that wrote some of these sermons. Edwards was able to make people fear their own life by constructing the idea of anyone who associates themselves with the devil in anyway will be punished. He would preach things such as “men walk over the pit of hell on a rotten covering’’(Sinners). People in the village would get these ideas deeply implanted in their brains so if they saw anybody do anything remotely related to the devil they would make it their mission to persecute them to save themselves.
