The two works of Art I choose to tell you about in their religious forms are
Meditating Buddha from Gandhara and St. Matthew from Ebbo Gospels . The general theme of these two pieces of Art are Picturing the Divine which I've chosen two religious paintings with the religious figure's the Buddha's and St. Matthew , the first work of art I'll be telling you about is the Meditating Buddha from Gandhara this amazing sculpture it's culture is from the Buddhist tradition, the historical period this sculpture is from Kushan Empire. The second painting of St. Matthew from Ebbo Gospels it's culture is from Early Medieval, the historical period is from Carolingian. Matthew from Ebbo Gospels, this was written and illuminated in France at Hautvillers monastery to Ebbo, Ebbo was a peasant who rose in the the clerical ranks to who become archbishopric of Reims, this book was presented to him as a gift once he became archbishop of Reims. With his guidance he made the monastery in France a major center of learning and illumination. Written and illuminated the Saint Matthews Ebbo Gospels between 816–835 century. The artist was inspired to write and illuminated The Ebbo Gospels throughout the Carolingian period and Medieval. Religious Art became very popular during this period and time , with Christianity spreading through Europe . Ebbo became a highly popular figure to the practice and was known for attracting followers to the faith of Christianity, during this period and time monasteries and major churches the monks and nuns, wrote most of the books and manuscripts since most book's were written to reflect the main book The Bible, most were written into parts depending the Bible and The Gospels, these books took a year or more to create. Art during this period and time was known for being unusual. It's thought that the artist took influence of author of another portrait to the one the Coronation Gospels that may have used as a model. But Ebbo Gospels and especially that of Saint Matthew Ebbo gave Saint Matthew a very unique style called the shivering style, the artist gave Saint Matthew a energetic style that was very different to the classic clam and solidity of Coronation Gospels . The artist wanted to show the stress and energy to make Saint Matthew jump out and seize the viewers attention, the Saint Matthew Ebbo Gospels medium is ink and tempera on vellum, it has a pose and brushwork technique , the subject matter is Christian.
