Garcia Marquez specifically chooses religious name to represent the expectations of each character. Marquez also uses symbolism through the names of the characters to depict a religious significance in the novella. Angela’s name represents of the word angel or angelic. Angela holds the name of angel which is perfect depiction of what women were raise to be in their society. “The girls had been reared to get married” (31). Her name is Santiago’s death without the expectation of Angela remaining a virgin; the Vicario brothers would have no have killed Santiago. Although family Honor is what the Vicario family had to withhold, it is religion that they use to build the rules of their family. Poncio Vicario translates to Pontius Pilate. In the bible
