In 1966 the Miners of Texas Western University made history. Don Haskins did not see race instead he saw players that could win games. During 1966, when Civil Rights were on the forefront, one coach, Don Haskins, went against the grain; and recruited seven black players based on their skills, which changed the face of collegiate basketball for years to come. Don Haskins once said, “ If you want to win you have to recruit.” This is where he became a genius.
During the early 1960s, the Loyola Ramblers became a pivotal educational establishment to include more African American players than other teams throughout the country. The historical facts presented by Lenehan (2013) define the differences between the number of black players playing on the team in comparisons to other teams during the racial integration period of sporting events Coach George Ireland of the Ramblers had defied conventions by starting four black players: “It couldn’t have happened if Coach George Ireland hadn’t flouted the conventions of the day by starting four black players nigh in and night out” (Lenehan 56). Word is they will be desegregating one of the high schools to bring down the tension. T.C Williams is born but tension rises even more with white parents and black parent not wanting their children to be mixed together. In the 1970s two small schools in Virginia integrated to form T.C. Williams high school. There was a lot of backlash through both communities as the thought of African Americans and Caucasians attending the same school angered a lot of people. The tensions came to a head when the head football coach was replace by Herman Boone an African American coach from North Carolina. Several of the white players wanted to protest and quit the team out of respect for both their coach and fear that their new coach wouldn’t give them the playing time they deserved. The former coach Bill Yoast agrees to join the team as an assistant so the players will continue playing the game.

We see people getting hate mail, getting it told to their faces, and behind closed doors. When the coach found out his family was getting death threats and hate male he could have easily just been like I can't take this and bench the black kids but it took courage to keep the black kids playing. Also, the kids get yelled at and beaten they could have gone home and went back to work but what good would that have done. As you can see this team and people related to this team went to hell and back cause they had a minority of white boys. They had to have courage from the very first game to the national championship game.
How do characters’ deal with conflict? Characters in the movie deal negatively with conflict. The majority of characters didn’t have any strategies to deal with conflict. They were making conflict more complicated.
Although winning would secure his job as coach, his main goal racial equality between the players were defiantly his vision for the team. By achieve this goal the players learnt to respect each other which created greater results for the team. Events that lead to achieving his vision was training camp, most importantly was showing Gettysburg graveyard where the biggest battle in the Civil War occurred. Coach Boone’s speech engaged them to act on what he said. Forcing them to ride, room and eat together pushed boundaries for the players but all succeed in fulfilling his goal.
Sports teach you life lessons like to not give up, and to always do your best. However, a life lesson is not “blacks better watch out for whites”.
