In the film “Remember The Titans”, directed by Boaz Yankins, the characters Julius, Gerry, Coach Boone and Mrs Bertier are re-introduced to us in the hospital scene.The audience may identify that the hospital scene is a climax or a turning point in the film. The mood created in this scene has a sad and sympathetic feeling for audience. In the hospital scene, we discover that Gerry is paralysed and unable to walk again after the crash, this result with his life becoming forever changed. This also means he cannot play the sport he loves, which is football, and has with a major effect on other team members. The theme of friendship is portrayed in this scene, with Gerry’s quote to the nurse - “He’s my brother, can 't you see the resemblance..?” I have also identified the theme of ‘Overcoming adversity’, as we see both Julius and Gerry accepting each, no matter what colour skin they are, they see themselves as ‘brothers’. The director uses the hospital scene to show audience the emotions of all the characters affected by the accident. The four film techniques that I have identified are over-the-shoulder shot, shallow focus, high angle shot, and soundtrack. In the beginning of the scene, the first technique that I had identified was over-the-shoulder shot. Yankins uses ‘Over-the-shoulder shot’ to show the emotions of Julius, and creates a sad, heartbreaking and disbelief effect on audience. We see this technique been used when coach Boone is informing Julius about the accident, and sadly explaining the bad new that gerry is paralysed and unable to play
