As some of us may know, the word renaissance means “rebirth.” The time is the renaissance resembles the time of “rebirth” in many areas in the European culture. These areas include science, art, literature, and technology. The Renaissance improved the Reformation as well as the Scientific Revolution. In the 1300s, there were many Italian scholars that developed an interest in Greek and Roman literature (pg. 326). These people were called humanities. They stressed the study of grammar, rhetoric history, and poetry. They searched for old works in Greek and Latin. One of the first humanities was Francesco Petrarch. He became famous as a teacher and scholar. He wrote many sonnets and poetry. Art was another big thing that flourished during the Renaissance. Medieval paintings stressed everyday life (pg. 328). It peaked in the late 15000s and early 1600s (pg. 332). William Shakespeare one an author and play creator that stood out the most. He used familiar places as well as many other playwrights. Shakespeare portrayed emotions and personality that few writers have ever done. In 1500, northern humanists suggested that the Roman Catholic Church had lost the spiritual mission. The humanist thought that the Church was more interested in making money than saving the people. This religious split is called the Reformation (pg. 333). The first break was in Germany where it helped lay the foundation of the Reformation. Germany lacked a strong central government in the early 1500s. Even though Germany formed the Holy Roman Empire, they couldn’t control it. John Tetzel was sent to raise funds and asked people to buy indulgences or pardons. Indulgences had been a reward for pious deeds like helping a poor person go on a crusade (pg. 333). The Renaissance popes sold them to raise money. This was for the people that wanted the Church to become more spiritual. Martin Luther was the first one to protest this
