Reading Response #1 In Rene Descartes “The Discourse on Method”, Descartes presents four different ideas. The first idea is to never accept anything as true without fact or reason because without fact how do we really know if anything truly exists. The second idea is that when faced with a difficulty/obstacle it is best to examine the difficulty into many different portions because knowing every angle of the situation could help our minds come to a quicker solution. The third idea is to manage all of our thoughts in order, starting with the easiest to the most complex, because keeping our thoughts in order can help us process information easier. I would at least need some sort of physical evidence, if not more, to have even the slightest possibility of belief. The part of this idea that I find a little unnerving is that people, including myself, are so quick to believe almost anything they see or hear. As a modern reader, I believe that the second idea is very helpful to people today. It is so easy for us to get frustrated when faced with a difficulty when we only think about that difficulty as having one possible solution. If we break down the obstacle and try and think of it from different angles then we might be able to come up with another, if not many more, solutions to the obstacle. As a modern reader, I believe that the third idea and the second idea correlate very well with each other. The third idea is about keeping all of your thoughts in order, starting with the easiest to the most complex. This goes along so well with the second idea because it is easier to face an obstacle when have thought about all of the facts, strategies, and possible outcomes. I think that the only way that we can break down a difficult obstacle is by having all of our thoughts in order about what the obstacle is, how we can strategize to overcome it, and then eventually how to firmly face
