“Do you agree with the decision taken in 2014 to repeal (cancel) carbon tax in Australia? You need to justify your answer with related reasons. You can either agree or disagree. Justification is mostly important.”

With climate change becoming a global problem, it seems to me that the repeal of Australia’s Carbon Tax system was a poor decision of the government. While the rest of the world is moving forward, this decision is taking Australia backwards in facing the global climate problems. China as the largest emitter of greenhouse gases has commenced its national carbon trading scheme in July 2017. United stated has imposed a limit on pollution from all energy companies which will have a great impact in reducing emissions. The European Union has an Emissions Trading Scheme which has been in existence since 2005.

Based on climate science predictions and in order to protect human wellbeing, there has been an international goal agreed by all governments to limit global warming to about 2°C and restrict impact on rainfall, extreme events, damage to the ecosystem and so on. This can be achieved by cutting down global greenhouse gas emissions around 60% by 2050 and an 80% reduction for Australia. A target of 5% reduction by 2020 with continued decreases after that is Australia’s commitment to achieving the 2050 goal. …show more content…

Under this system, entities which emit over 25,000 tonnes per year of carbon dioxide equivalent greenhouse gases and which were not in the transport or agriculture sectors are required to obtain emission permits. The permits can be either purchased from the government or issued free as part of industry assistance measures.
