The purpose of my essay is to analyze the representation of nature in Wallace Stevens’ “The Idea of Order at Key West” . In conversation with Harold Bloom, Anca Peiu and John N. Serio, I argue that “The Idea of Order at Key West” offers a Transcendentalist construction of nature. In the first part of my essay I look at Transcendentalist ways of constructing nature. In the second part of my essay I demonstrate that Wallace Stevens employs the Transcendentalist tropes, techniques and ideas and in the third part of my essay I look at how Wallace Stevens approaches the English Romanticism in correlation with metaphysical ideas. Stevens took over some of the natural principles of Transcendentalism and advanced them in his poem “The Idea of Order at Key West”, where his inclination to aesthetic meditation and transformative power of one’s imagination on different aspects of natural, physic world are presented. As Harold Bloom says “ The alliance between naturalism and a visionary faculty is not an easy one to understand” because the author introduces the discrepancy between reality and perception. One possible implication of this is that he tries to present the ordering power of art by imagining what the idea of order is and what we need to know in order to easily recognize the right order. However, we cannot see the woman or hear her the lyrics of her song, but in a certain way we can experience the speaker’s transformation. Overall, Wallace Stevens tries to combine his principle of “new Romanticism” with a nature that transcends human being, somehow he takes a Transcendental turn in his poem, he had an epiphany, the importance of art, without it and without the woman’s song, people would never be able to comprehend the order of nature.
