The American dream is a dream of a land in which one can prosper with ambition and hard work. This idea has created many illusions for some because in reality the American dream is proven to be something that is rarely achieved. No individual is guaranteed success or destined for failure, but it is apparent that women, people of color, and those born into poverty will face greater obstacles than others, despite being a greater part of the American population. An author that tackles the issue of class in the United States is Gregory Mantsios. In his essay, “Class in America-2009”, Mantsios aims to prove that class affects people’s lives in drastic ways.

Over the course of grammar and middle school, I’ve notice that there are things that students and teachers find relatable and have in common. I faintly but truly remember math word problems involving things like video games, devices, and other toys that I couldn’t afford most of the time. That separated me from the connection shared from teacher to student on a mental level. Many people perceive that people in higher social classes are more educated than those in lower social classes just because of their social status. That perception is usually made by people of a higher social class.
Being born into a particular family determines how well off you are. Class in America determines the people that influence you, and the better opportunities you are exposed to. In Gregory Mantsios writing of “Class in America” you can understand the many differences between class and how one might have better success. Mantsios shows three profiles of three different people born into different classes. One of the profiles shows how the lifestyle might be born into a wealthy family.

Mantsios describes four different myths about America and the people’s social class. These myths prove the social classes there are in America and where they stand. These myths are all lies and talk about what American people are like and what they face. Mantsios also, talks about the different types of realities Americans have with the different social classes which exist.
I had an opportunity to watch a movie “People like us” in my class last week. This movie has great impact, which reflects the images of different types of society. It focuses side by side on different social classes by describing their economical social status in society. In our society, most of we Americans do not think about how education, income, aspirations, family backgrounds, and the appearances distinguish someone as an individual of a certain class of society? A particular class is very difficult to mark than race or ethnicity difference.
“People in the United States do not like to talk about class.”(331) There are many myths that are taught today in America such as “The United States is fundamentally a classless society.”(333). Another myth would be “We are essentially a middle-class nation. ”(333). A last example for myths includes “Everyone has an equal chance to succeed.”

To introduce the existence of this issue, Mantsios states that this country’s citizens “don’t like to talk about class...or class privileges, or class oppression, or the class nature of society” (Mantsios 378). This is the case in America today because people are neglecting to acknowledge the existence of these elusive
Children born into poor families as three times more likely to die from diseases, neglect, accidents, or violence during their first year of life than children born into rich families. Higher income people are more likely to vote and more economically conservative. The working class are economically liberal and socially conservative. Poor communities are policed more than any other class. We form stereotypes against people based on how much money they have.
The rigid class system in Middle Age Europe was a primary factor that determined the course of events. In Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, there are underlying issues throughout the plot involving classes of the characters, and their roles within their class. While for the time period, it was common for those in lower classes to be looked down upon, Shakespeare uses many mediums to slyly challenge this idea. Throughout the play, Shakespeare makes the class differences obvious, yet creates certain character dynamics which challenge preconceptions. Twelfth Night is centered around a distinct and rigid class system, yet Shakespeare comments on its negative impacts, and yearns for a more fluid system, in order to create a more just and fair world.
The lower class works for their living and spends what money they have on things they need. Whereas the upper class, usually has a higher education and better paying jobs than the other classes in America. Thus, heritage plays a big part in reasons of social classes.
There are four social classes: upper class, middle class, working class and under class. An example of people who may be discriminated against because of their social class would be someone who is poor. Individuals who are poor, under class and some working class, in school could be called ‘scruffy’ by their peers because they might not be able to afford new clothes. This could lead to teachers discriminating and treating students differently. This could show overt and covert discrimination in a health and social care setting.
Social class is a hierarchy based on wealth, living standards, education level and occupation which impact people’s lives for better or worse. In this essay, I have chosen to explore the idea of how social classes affect the way we treat people. The four texts To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Me Before You by Jojo Moyes, The Help by Kathryn Stockett, and Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen all capture the idea in which social class can affect our lives. In each text, we see how social classes divide people from another, that most characters are aware of where they stand in their society because of social status, and how relationships across different social classes can be formed.
Social classes are a form of social stratification that refers to the existence of structured inequalities between individuals and groups in society. A social class is a group of people of comparable status, power and wealth which are usually classified as upper class, middle class, and lower class. For each class, there are some specific opportunities available that influence their social life. We can understand about the particularity of the chances through unequal distribution of these opportunities between individuals in social classes. In here belonging to a social class seems to be an obstacle for some individuals to obtain equal opportunity, unlike upper class people.
