Women are represented in a very filthy, objectified way, especially in advertisements and social media which results in people being socialized to consider women as objects. Advertisements were started in the 19th century. They stereotyped women in the advertisements and showed them to be dependent on men. Every product advertised for women was said to please the man. This was their way of selling products to women. Indecent representation of women does not only mean sexualizing women but also representing women in any way that degrades them. In the 19th century products were advertised only on radio, newspapers and pamphlets. There were ads which showed women in an indecent light but not as much, and as openly, as when advertisements were started on television. For example, In the 1950s, Chase & Sanborn, a coffee brand, published an advertisement which showed a man sitting on a chair with a lady lying face down in his lap. The way the women are choreographed, dressed and their expressions will make a decent person cringe. These were just a few item songs that have been mentioned. In reality almost every Bollywood movie has an item number to attract more audience. It is their way of promoting the movie. So, if people are not interested in the movie or actors, at least they’ll go to the theatre to watch the item song. Movies show women as subordinates to men. They are shown as eye candy with not much substance given to their character. 50 Shades of Grey is an example of indecent representation of women in both movies and books. The movie ‘Wolf of Wall Street’ showed women doing absurd things. It is nothing but offensive and filthy.
