The early period of the 1950’s saw a change for many around the globe. The aftermath of a devastating war was sitting heavy on the futures of many. Whilst there seemed to be a positive outlook this was not the case for Korea. A country now divided in two is still feeling the affects of a destructive three-year period to this very day. The representation is evident through Korean popular culture, an example being the Korean film industry. Often seen as a product of patriotism, the Korean government has worked exceptionally hard to spread the message of their history across generations.

Yeo-il is a symbolic representation of not only the village but also of Korea and what they wish to be, carefree and unaware of worries. However, once her death occurs when the American soldiers invade we can see the tension rise for the villagers. As an audience it is evident the little bit of hope for peace has now left them all leaving behind a unspoken burden in the air. In its final scene the soldiers have had developed a friendship that they do not take for granted. They place their lives on the line in order to protect the villagers from the American’s. The sister is part of a show in which she has to dress up as an animal. When she walks out onto stage we are given a view of the workers that are seperated from Sophie by a backdrop. When reading this scene we can interpret the the workers dressing up as animals to mask the fear and anger they feel as a society. Alongside this, Sophie has low lighting unlike infront of the stage. This can be phrased the clear line between what is happening in Korean society versus what is desired. The workers entertaining the kids is seen as the solution of ignoring the problem at hand and continuing on with life.
